Legendary Sportscaster Greg Gumbel Dead at 78

Legendary CBS Sportscaster and play-by-play analyst Greg Gumbel has passed away after a battle with cancer, according to a statement from his family released Friday by CBS Sports.

Gumbel was 78 years old.

Gumbel's instantly recognizable voice was synonymous with meaningful NFL football as he frequently called games that had an impact on the postseason. But Gumbel was never just involved in the NFL. The longtime panelist and commentator was also the voice of Selection Sunday, announcing the teams selected for March Madness.

In 2024, Gumbel missed March Madness due to family health issues and was replaced by Ernie Johnson. The staff paid tribute to Gumbel at the start of the broadcast.
