Former President Barack Obama's chief campaign strategist, David Axelrod, said on CNN on Monday that President Joe Biden is a “perfect insider” in Washington, D.C., while also describing Biden as a D.C. “outsider.” He compared the accomplishments of former President Jimmy Carter.
The Carter Center announced Sunday that the former Democratic president died at age 100 after several brief hospital visits in recent years. On CNN's “The Read with Jake Tapper,” guest host Wolf Blitzer played footage of Biden's comments about Carter's death and discussed how Biden was president. “But it struck me that one of the differences between Joe Biden and Jimmy Carter was that Jimmy Carter spent four years in Washington. Joe Biden spent half a century,” Axelrod said. he said. “Jimmy Carter was the perfect outsider. Joe Biden is the perfect insider.”
“There was never any real consolation between Carter and that town, because Carter came with the promise of taking on the conventional politics of the time and healing the country after Watergate and the Vietnam War,” Axelrod said. he added. “That put him at odds with many power brokers in Washington. Axelrod went on to say that Carter also refused to drink at White House events, underscoring Carter's commitment to take on the “worst elements” of government.
“He didn't drink alcohol, the lubricant of Washington commerce and politics, at White House events,” Axelrod added. “So he left Washington as an outsider in a lot of ways, and he came back to Washington as an outsider for the last time, which is true in terms of humanity as a whole, but still retaining some of the worst elements. He was a man of faith who believed in his commitment to take on “our government.'' ”
As Biden's term comes to an end, political commentators are critical of what he will be remembered for during his four-year term. Former Hillary Clinton campaign senior adviser Karen Finney sought to defend Biden's accomplishments on CNN Sunday, saying Biden will be remembered for his “accomplishments” in foreign policy and the Middle East. But CNN's Scott Jennings disagreed. He said Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan was disastrous. He also said he was concerned about Biden's mental state.
