The clock has moved on the foreign exchange market and we have embarked on a new chart. The final closing price levels for major pairs in 2024 are:
- Euro: 1.0354
- Japanese Yen: 157.21 yen
- British Pound: 1.2524
- Swiss Franc: 0.9072
- Canadian dollar: 1.4380
- Australian dollar: 0.6188
- New Zealand dollar: 0.5582
- US dollar index: 1.0380
This is a chart showing annual changes, but it's not the prettiest chart as the US dollar could be on either side of the equation. There may also be a slight error here as NZD is slightly ahead of JPY. This means that the Yen had its worst performance in 2024.
The winner was the US dollar.
Bitcoin ended the year at $95,538.
The top performer on the Nasdaq 100 was Applovin, followed (distantly) by Microstrategy, Palantir, and Nvidia. Palantir topped the S&P 500, followed by Vistra in second place. Topping the list for DJIA components was Nvidia, which was only added in November, followed by Walmart with a whopping 72% increase.
