In a season already full of disasters, the biggest misfortune imaginable has befallen Rangers at perhaps the worst possible time.
Officials said Igor Shesterkin was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday night with an upper body injury.
With this designation, the Blueshirts will be without their star goaltender for at least the next three games.
With Shesterkin unavailable, Louis Domingue was recalled from AHL Hartford.
The expectation is that Jonathan Quick will start the majority of the games, with Domingue possibly playing in one of the Rangers' upcoming games at Washington and Chicago.
It's been just three and a half weeks since Shesterkin signed an eight-year, $92 million extension with the Rangers, making him the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history.
But once the ink dried, the Rangers continued their spiral. They are 3-9 and traded for captain Jacob Trouba and 2019 No. 2 overall pick Kaapo Kakko.
In the process, the Rangers also fell to last place in the Metropolitan Division.
Shesterkin has a 3-6 record in the nine games he has played since signing, and the deal will pay him $11.5 million annually. However, he was pulled twice before making three appearances in the season.

The rest of his stats are naturally affected by the collapse of the rest of the team, but so is his play. As the losses piled up, Shesterkin found himself allowing more goals than he normally would have saved.
Since Dec. 6, he has a 3.22 points per game average and a .900 save percentage.
