OMAHA, Neb. — In three Big East games, St. John's has lost by 42 points from the 3-point line. It also came in a disappointing 57-56 loss to Creighton on Tuesday.
St. John's made just 2-of-9 shots from deep and only two 3-pointers after halftime, while Creighton went 9-of-26.
“First of all, they weren't open,” coach Rick Pitino said when asked about the lack of shots from distance this season. “They're trying to take Aaron away. [Scott’s] 3 point shot. He's not doing well and we're not a 3-point shooting team. But that doesn't mean we can't win. We can get a big win and continue to have a very successful season. That is not the strength of the baseball team.
“You can't try to be something you're not. Last game we were 12-8. [from 3]That's fine. But you can't be a high-volume 3-point shooting team without 3-point shooters. You need to be who you are and be all of yourself. ”
The Johnnies forced Creighton into 19 turnovers, 10 of which were committed by point guard Stephen Ashworth.
They did so even though they didn't press much during the game.
Pitino doesn't think that's a strength of this team.

“We're not a very good pressing team this year. That's not our strong suit,” Pitino said. “We just have to make free throws and push down the stretch to win games. We played a lot of minutes there. We're not a great shooting team, we're not a great pressing team. We have a very good one-on-one [defensive] A very strong team. We are not trying to be something we are not. ”
