Kirk Herbstreit had time on his hands.
ESPN's “College Gameday” analyst calls out “false narratives” after someone trolled him on social media for congratulating the University of Michigan on Tuesday's win over Alabama in the Reliaquest Bowl. issued a warning.
Herbstreit immediately came under fire from the aforementioned X user for wanting the Crimson Tide to be selected for the 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP).
“Congratulations to @UMichFootball on their big win!! Huge thing for them and @bigten.” Written by Herb Streit X after the Wolverines won 19-13.
“You wanted to put Alabama in the playoffs,” someone replied, including a laughing meme of WWE star Jimmy Uso.
“Keep believing the false narrative, clown,” Herbstreit shot back.
Herbstreit laughed as he saw another message from someone congratulating him and fellow College GameDay analyst Desmond Howard on “picking the LiliaQuest Bowl correctly.”
“Wait a minute” Herbstreit I wrote. “Why do facts get in the way of the bull’s story! Hahaha!!”
Warning: Tweet contains swearing
Herbstreit has made it clear that he believes it is a false story that Alabama was guaranteed to be selected as a three-loss team at the time.
X posted a community note with a link to me Indiana says he shouldn't have been on the field. They were defeated by Notre Dame in the first round.
He also Explanation in “Sports Center” Indiana won 11 games and beat “nobody.”
“Indiana State was the underdog in that game,” Herbstreit said the day after Indiana lost 27-17 to the Fighting Irish. “We weren't the team that should have been on that field considering the other teams that could have been there. Make no mistake about Indiana, they had a great year, but we have to make the playoffs.” The committee should do a better job of weighing who is the best 12 and who is most deserving. I hope they do because, stupidly, they've won 11, but they've won 11. That's a lot of BS. We need to find the best team, and just standing on that field last night and watching the game play out, it was incredibly obvious.”
But Herbstreit has guarded Alabama in the past.
Last December, he raised eyebrows when he said, “Bama should have beaten Florida State, and they did,” in winning the final spot in the four-team CFP.
The committee's decision resulted in the argument that the then-undefeated Seminoles were not the same team after losing quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending ankle injury.
It was the first time an undefeated Power Five team was removed from consideration for a CFP spot.
On “College GameDay” on Nov. 18, Herbstreit made the case for Alabama's playoff spot, hours before Travis dislocated his ankle in the Seminoles' 58-13 loss to North Alabama. .
“There’s no way the SEC champion will be left out.” he said.
After making the final decision, Herbstreit said a number of things factored into the decision, including the strength of the schedule and the serious injury.
“This team is not the same without Jordan Travis.” Herbstreit said in a video about X. “…Please don’t take this personally. This is a reflection of our evaluation of Alabama vs. Florida State and simply looking at who is the better team right now, and that is… That's why Bama should have had the advantage against Florida State, and it does. Listen, you don't have to agree with that, but there's no agenda.”
