The Brooklyn woman relentlessly stalked by subway suspect Kamel Hawkins says he terrified her for weeks and is thankful she wasn't the one who ended up in the hospital. He said he was doing it.
“It could have been me,” the woman told The Post on Wednesday on condition of anonymity. “People always say you have to read the red flags, but I’m glad I did.
“It's sad,” she added. “I don't want anything bad to happen to him. He could have finished school and become an IT technician. He could have walked away from the project. He could have changed his own story.”
Instead, Hawkins, 23, was charged in Manhattan Criminal Court with attempted murder and assault for the horrific car crash of 45-year-old straphanger Joseph Lynskey.
Hawkins had already been charged with assault and harassment in Brooklyn for allegedly pushing Lynskey, who miraculously survived despite a fractured skull, broken ribs and ruptured spleen.
The victim was listed in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital on Wednesday.
Hawkins' alleged stalker said the two met while studying at the Brooklyn Job Corps.
She said the pair “started dating” but never developed a romantic relationship, which quickly turned cold after Hawkins hit her dog for no reason in the summer.
“I went back in the room and said, 'Did you just hit my dog?'” And he goes, “Oh, that's Willin'.” Why do you hit my dog? My dogs are like my children,” she said. “Then I told him I wasn't cool with him.”
But the woman said she was unable to receive messages from Hawkins, even though she blocked his phone.
On October 9th, he showed up at her apartment.
“Out of nowhere he kicks in my door. He's wearing a ski mask,” she said.
She said it lasted several days, so she showed up at Hawkins' father's apartment in Brooklyn's Whitman House, but to no avail.
“I told my son, 'Please tell my son to stop kicking down the door. I'm scared,'” the woman told Shamel Hawkins. “He keeps sending me sexual text messages.” His dad seemed more interested in keeping us out the door.
“[Kamel] “He came to the door wearing the same ski mask he was wearing in the video,” she said. “He poured bleach on me and my best friend. It got in our eyes. He's screaming, 'This woman is crazy.' I don't know you guys.
She said the harassment reached its climax on October 19th.
“I came out, I was going out with my boyfriend, and he was wearing the same ski mask and the same hoodie. [subway shove] video,” she recalled. “I pulled out the pepper spray. I told him I was going to pepper spray him. He grabbed a can of drink and threw it at me. 'My boyfriend isn't with me, and my uncle isn't with me. We’re not together.”
“I sprayed him and nothing really worked,” she said.
The woman then called police and Hawkins was arrested, but was released without bail on Oct. 20 to participate in a court intervention program, court records show.
Meanwhile, the frightened woman was forced to request emergency relocation from the New York City Housing Authority on November 11, and is now living in another apartment complex.
“He's crawling,” she said of Hawkins. “You don't even know where he is. One time me and my boyfriend were sitting outside at 2 or 3 in the morning and he was just walking. I thought that was weird. ”
