An elderly Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives was injured after falling on the marble steps of the Capitol, according to people familiar with the matter. report on social media.
North Carolina Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx was reportedly bleeding after a fall on Friday and was being treated by medical personnel.
The leak came after Fox congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on successfully securing the vote of Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson in his second term as Speaker of the House.
“There was a lot of blood, but as reporters left the scene, officers said she was OK. She was conscious and talking.” said ABC reporter John Parkinson.
“She is currently sitting on one of the stairs with a paper towel pressed to her face. Staff is helping her.” said NewsNation correspondent Tom Dempsey.
Mr. Fox, 81, is chairman of the House Education Committee. She has represented North Carolina's 5th District since 2005.
Her office released a statement to Spectrum News about the incident.
“Congressman Foxx slipped and fell while descending the marble steps outside the House chamber after walking up to speak to his family in the gallery,” the statement said. statement read. “After being helped to her feet and attended to by medical personnel, she made her own way to her doctor's office where she was treated for several cuts. Everything appears to be OK.”
The incident is likely to reignite calls for term limits in Congress, following several other health cases involving older lawmakers.
In December, former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell fell during a Republican staff lunch and was treated for injuries including a cut to his face and a sprained wrist. He had previously suffered concussions from other falls and had also had several incidents where he appeared to freeze in public.
Also in December, another U.S. congressman was found living in an assisted living facility that provides services for people with dementia, after disappearing from public view for several months. Rep. Kay Granger's office denied that the Texas Republican was receiving treatment for dementia, but her son confirmed she was suffering from “dementia issues.”
