Rick Pitino slams St. John’s Simeon Wilcher for late dunk attempt

Simeon Wilcher may be crawling into Rick Pitino's doghouse.

St. John's coaches were furious with the sophomore guard for attempting a windmill dunk in the final seconds with the result decided.

In a scenario like this, St. John's players typically dribble over the clock.

Pitino began his postgame press conference by apologizing to Butler after Johnny's 70-62 victory at Carnesecca Arena.

“I wasn't happy at all with the way the game ended tonight,” Pitino said. “I don't know. If he had pulled it off and it had gone in, he would have been ridiculed nationally. So why would someone want to be ridiculed nationally? That's common sense to me. is lacking.”

Meanwhile, Wilcher continues to struggle.

They were held to 4 points on 1 of 8 shots in 18 minutes.

In his last three league games, he is 5-of-29 from the field.

Coach Pitino was then disappointed that his players did not follow the scouting report.

He has started to think about this recently.

He brought up the story unprompted as he began his post-win media session.

He made similar comments after the loss to Creighton on New Year's Eve.

“Young people today are different. I'm struggling with that. I'm not quitting. Like some coaches, I'm really struggling with a lot of things right now,” Pitino said. “My work ethic is great, but what I'm hearing is what really bothers me. I stopped drinking in the New Year, but I'm planning to make the shortest resolution in human history and start drinking soon.”

Freshman Jayden Glover (wrist/thumb) only played in the final seconds of the first half.

Pitino said he has struggled to shoot the ball and that's why junior Sadiq Ibine Ayo has logged better times than him.

He expects Glover to be okay for Tuesday's game against Xavier.
