‘His Legacy Will Live On’

Former President James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. was remembered by his grandson Jason Carter, who said the former president's “legacy will live on.”

At Carter's funeral at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Jason Carter, chairman of the Carter Center's Board of Directors, spoke of how the Carter Presidential Center was filled with the spirit of his grandfather. “There will be many opportunities to honor my grandfather this week, but it was important for all of us to pause here,” Jason Carter said. “As you all know, these buildings are filled with his life, not just because this is a museum of his life, but also because this is a collection of his beloved paintings. This place is filled with his spirit.”

“And the real reason this spirit fills this place is because of the people standing here,” continued Jason Carter. “To the people in this room at the library, the museum, and the Carter Center itself, you are the true guardians of my grandparents' legacy.”

Jason Carter went on to admit that his family had been “thinking” about his grandfather's death for some time, but they knew in their hearts that the former president's legacy would live on. ” But that's because of the hard work and spirit of the Carter Presidential Center workers.

“We have all been thinking about and planning this day for a long time, but obviously it is still difficult for all of us. For us, for my family, and for many of you. I'm sure you can see the gratitude on their faces,” Jason Carter said. “But I want you to know that while we mourn the loss of my grandfather, as I and you all know in our hearts, his legacy continues to be felt by millions around the world.” It will live on not just because you influenced people, but because it very specifically represents your spirit, your knowledge, your daily work and accomplishments.”
