New Orleans Assistant District Attorney found dead by suicide

Ian Kersting, assistant attorney general for the Diocese of New Orleans, was found dead in his office in an apparent suicide, police said.

New Orleans police said a 34-year-old man was found in an office with an “apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.” WVUE-DT. His body was discovered by police at the district attorney's office around 9 p.m. Saturday.

New Orleans EMS arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed to the department.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the New Orleans Police Department for comment.

Kersting, 34, was admitted to the Louisiana State Bar in October 2020.

He was assigned to the District Attorney's Office as an expert on sexual harassment cases and was assigned to the office's Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). The initiative worked with the New Orleans Police Department to investigate and prosecute sex crimes using recovered DNA evidence.

After his death, the New Orleans District Attorney's Office released a statement mourning the loss of a “beloved member” of the department.

“The family of the Orleans Parish Attorney's Office suffered a terrible tragedy Saturday night,” the statement said. “Assistant District Attorney Ian Kersting was a beloved member of our office, and we extend our love and deepest condolences to his family.”

“It is important that we support each other at this time and we ask the media to respect the privacy of the individuals affected,” it said in a statement.

Kersting's death came days after a terrorist attack rocked the city in the early hours of New Year's Day, leaving 14 people dead and dozens injured.

The FBI recovered an ISIS black flag from the rented truck and discovered that Mr. Jabbar had pledged allegiance to ISIS in an online video posted hours before the attack.
