Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that the violence of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol “didn't end that day.”
Pelosi: “It's not over that day'' told CBS News Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation'' “You know… [President-elect Trump] “I called on these people to continue their violence. My husband was a victim of all of them and still bears the injuries from those attacks.”
This Monday marks the fourth anniversary of the attack that occurred on January 6, 2021. President Trump promised clemency to rioters who showed up at the Capitol on the same day Congress certified President Biden's 2020 election victory. The president-elect also hinted that some pardons could be granted within the first hours of his second term.
“You're a really strange person to be the president of the United States who would be willing to pardon people who were involved in an attack,” Pelosi said during an appearance on “Face the Nation.”
Some former Capitol Police officers who were present during the Jan. 6 attack said President Trump's promise to pardon the rioters was a “betrayal.”
“This is a betrayal and a stab in the heart,” said the former sergeant. Aquilino Gonell, who suffered long-term injuries on the day of the attack, told The Washington Post.
Harry Dunn, a former Capitol Police officer and Gonell's colleague, said allowing the insurrectionists to commit violence showed a lack of responsibility on the part of the commander-in-chief.
“They broke the law, they violated police officers, they attacked us, and then they came back and claimed we did it in the name of Donald Trump,” Dunn said. “And Donald Trump will pardon them and say, okay, all is forgiven.”
The Hill has reached out to Trump's transition team for comment.
