The New Orleans Saints and the National Football League (NFL) Foundation announced they will donate a combined $1 million to help victims of the Bourbon Street truck attack on New Year's Day.
Saints owner Gail Benson and her team announced they would donate $500,000, and the NFL Foundation said they would match that amount, bringing the total relief fund to $1 million.
“Our community has experienced an unimaginable tragedy, and our hearts are broken as we remember the victims and survivors of the New Year's Day terrorist attacks in New Orleans,” Benson said in a statement. Ta.
“As a league, our cities and teams compete at the highest level of competition and share a fierce rivalry. Our staff and players work tirelessly to achieve our goals, and we share victories and defeats. But through football, we stand together. We stand together against hatred in all its forms, and we overcome fear and terror with unwavering determination and purpose rooted in love, compassion and kindness. ” Benson continued.
Benson said the team and the NFL are working with the Greater New Orleans Foundation and United Way to most effectively reach the victims.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragic events in New Orleans,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “The NFL is committed to supporting the resilient community of New Orleans during this difficult time.”
The relief money was donated after Shamsuddin Jabbar drove a rented truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street on New Year's Day, killing 14 people and injuring 35 others, police said.
