Suffolk County cop airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in LIE crash

A Suffolk County police officer was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries after his patrol car crashed Sunday night on the Long Island Expressway, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the crash occurred near Exit 55 in Brentwood around 6:10 p.m.

The officer suffered serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital, the department said.

Sources said the helicopter landed on a shuttered section of the highway that is usually busy. News 12 crews were on the scene.

According to News 12, multiple vehicles appear to have collided between Exits 53 and 55.

Details about the officer's condition were not released, and it was not immediately clear what led to the crash.

Detectives from the police department's Major Incidents Unit were investigating the scene with lane closures affecting the westbound side into Sunday evening.
