Location sharing in Android settings (Kurt “Cyber Guy” Knutson)
New location sharing toggle
Google has introduced a new “Google Location Sharing” toggle, now integrated directly into Android settings. With this update, you no longer need to go through Google Maps to manage your location sharing settings. This new feature is part of the latest update to Google Play Services and is designed to simplify and strengthen your control over location sharing.
What does sharing location information mean?
Before you turn this off, let's understand why you need to turn it on and what happens when you turn it off.
Imagine this. I'm meeting a friend in a crowded city. Instead of exchanging dozens of text messages, your friends can simply see your real-time location on Google Maps. That's the power of location sharing. This allows you to share your exact location with specific contacts, along with helpful details like your device's battery level and estimated time of arrival if you're navigating.
However, if location sharing is turned off, your movements will remain private. No one can track where you are and your personal information is better protected from potential misuse. Apps and services will no longer be able to access your location data, which not only improves your privacy, but also saves battery life by reducing background tracking.
So before you decide, think about whether you want to stay connected or stay private, which one best suits your needs.
