“Shark Tank” investor Kevin O'Leary said he is working on a deal to prevent popular social media platform TikTok from being banned in the United States over privacy concerns.
Republican lawmakers have banned state and federal officials from using TikTok after numerous reports that it collects sensitive information from users and sends it to China's Communist government. The company has denied the reports and is fighting a bill that would force it to divest from ByteDance, a Chinese company with ties to the Communist government.
“The Supreme Court is going to reject this!” Watch it happen.
Speaking on Fox Business on Monday, O'Leary revealed that he is working with a syndicate of investors to save TikTok who want to meet government demands on the platform.
“What happens here? TikTok doesn't need to be shut down. It just needs to change ownership to comply with U.S. law as authorized by Congressional order,” O'Leary said.
He also said that to protect Americans from espionage concerns, buyers may need to rewrite the algorithm and get the Pentagon to approve the changes.
“This is about more than just acquiring TikTok's U.S. assets. It's about something bigger: protecting the privacy of TikTok's 170 million U.S. users. By empowering creators and small businesses. “And building a platform that prioritizes humans over algorithms,” he said. I wrote on social media.
O'Leary also criticized TikTok's owner's attempt to challenge the ban by appealing to the Supreme Court.
“This company lives in a dreamland where it thinks the U.S. Supreme Court will uphold spyware against American citizens. That's not going to happen!” he added.
TikTok challenged the platform's ban, saying it was a violation of its right to free speech.
“The Supreme Court is going to reject this! Let's wait and see,” he concluded.
