Trump to meet with Senate Republicans on Wednesday

President-elect Trump is scheduled to visit the Capitol on Wednesday at the invitation of Senate Republican leaders, according to three sources familiar with the invitation.

Republican leaders have not disclosed the time of the meeting, but Mr. Trump has previously met with Republican senators at the Republican Policy Luncheon, held every Tuesday.

Senate Republican Leader John Barrasso of Wyoming told reporters Monday that Republican senators plan to meet with President Trump soon to discuss policy.

“Maybe relatively soon we will meet with the president, visit him and discuss what he wants. According to the Semaphore reporter, we are all looking in exactly the same direction,” Barrasso said. he told reporters.

The meeting is expected to be more of an opportunity for senators to meet Trump face-to-face than a heated debate over strategy and policy details, three people told NewsNation.

One of the big questions that needs to be looked at closely is whether to pursue President Trump's agenda in a single budget reconciliation package or split it into two packages.

The budget reconciliation process would allow Republican leaders to bypass the Democratic filibuster in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R.S.D.) has voiced his support for first moving a budget adjustment bill that would strengthen border security and expand domestic fossil fuel production.

He hopes the second package will extend the expiring Trump tax cuts and cut spending.

But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and House Republican leaders want to tackle all of President Trump's major agenda items at once.

House Republican leaders want to avoid the difficult task of passing the budget reconciliation bill twice, given their slim majority, Senate Republican officials said.
