O’Leary: Trump US-Canada merger an interesting concept

“Shark Tank” star Kevin O'Leary said Monday that the concept of the United States and Canada merging into one country is “very interesting.”

“I went to Palm Beach for a few days. On Saturday we talked about Canada,” O'Leary said Monday night on NewsNation's “The Hill.” “You know, Mr. Trump says outrageous things. We all know that. And he's now making policy through social media, which is causing a lot of…a lot of activity,” he said. Let’s call it that.”

“And there are some very interesting concepts within that idea,” he told host Blake Berman. “One of them would be economic union, because… Canadians don't want to give up their sovereignty… but what he said was, 'Let's be more powerful.' Because in today's world, economic success is power. is.”

The investors' comments follow President-elect Donald Trump's pitch for a merger between the United States and Canada following the announcement of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation.

“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, significantly lower taxes, and complete protection from the Russian and Chinese shipping threats that surround Canada at all times,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. said.

Last month, the president-elect also said, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st province,” and questioned why the United States would provide subsidies to Canada.

“No one can answer why we give Canada over $100 million a year in subsidies. It makes no sense!” Trump wrote in Truth Social at the time.

The commander-in-chief has been trolling Trudeau in recent weeks, calling him Canada's “governor” after a meeting at Florida's Mar-a-Lago resort. The prime minister's resignation follows the president-elect's announcement that he would impose new tariffs on Canadian goods imported into the United States, a promise that Trump said he would reverse if the two countries merged.

President Trump has also recently set his sights on the Panama Canal and Greenland as potential locations within the U.S. territory.

Mr. O'Leary, himself a Canadian, told Mr. Berman that Mr. Trump: “'I think it's a waste of time to spend time with the Canadians who came down… Justin Trudeau and some of the ministers. 'I would argue,' he said. ”

The Hill has reached out to Prime Minister Trudeau's office for comment.
