In a recent video, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the platform will undergo profound changes in the coming days. In addition to lifting filters that have inhibited discussion on certain subjects like gender and immigration, Meta plans to replace its politically biased fact checkers with a community notes system similar to Elon Musk's X. Zuckerberg has pledged to work with Donald Trump to restore freedom of expression both in the United States and in other countries that use this platform.
Comparing these efforts to the way Meta has operated in the past, many are understandably skeptical of this new conservative transformation.
One of them was Glenn Beck.
He believes Zuckerberg's sudden repentance reflects a desire to pursue his true passion rather than a true change of heart, but only if he's with the right team. It is possible.
All of the changes Zuckerberg has promised are good, but it's not because Zuckerberg “listened to you,” Glenn said. Mr. Zuckerberg is not changing course because he knows exactly what people are doing and is responding to their needs. This isn't even an attempt to make up for all the lives and businesses destroyed by Meta's deplatforming, shadowbanning, and demonetization.
This is about being on the right team.
Before Trump 2.0, Zuckerberg “went to the elites who were on the winning side last time and said, 'Okay, what do we need to do?'” Glenn says.
What Meta needed to do was to implement a censorship policy according to the government's wishes and to do so by using “a select elite of fact-checkers”.
And now Mr. Zuckerberg is doing the same for the next administration.
“Now that the world has changed, at least here in America, they still don't listen to you. It's not because you said anything. It's because Donald Trump changed America and now the wall And also, it's not you, it's the powers that be, and it's offensive,” Glenn charges.
Why is Mr. Zuckerberg so insistent on being on the government's good side?
Is it because he has ambitions other than social media that require government funding?
“Meta is virtual reality,” Glenn says. “Who do you think invested billions of dollars in VR?”
US Army, Navy, Air Force, that's who.
“Meta lost about $50 billion in its Reality Labs division, augmented reality, virtual reality, Metaverse. … Part of what this means is that government contracts don't stay with Meta. I think so,” Glenn said, adding: [Zuckerberg’s] My heart is VR and AR. ”
“He wants to make sure he's not off the government's nipples,” Glenn surmises.
