Two looters were recently arrested after dressing as firefighters and breaking into a local home vacated by the Palisades fire, according to information provided to area residents by the Los Angeles Police Department on Saturday evening.
Police have arrested dozens of looters who targeted the wealthy Pacific Palisades neighborhood, which was devastated by fire last week. Although many areas have been destroyed, some homes remain intact, tempting looters.
Police announced that seven more looters were recently arrested, in addition to the 20 looters arrested at the beginning of the fire. About 400 police officers were assigned to the Palisades fire, which started in the Palisades but has since spread to the hills overlooking Malibu to the west and Bel Air to the east. The fire has burned 23,654 acres, but was only 11% contained as of Saturday night.
The weather forecast is ominous as strong Santa Ana winds are expected to return early in the week. Local authorities estimate the winds will be about 60% to 70% as strong as when they spread the fire last Tuesday and Wednesday. Firefighters are rushing to stop the fire from progressing by then.
Local fires have forced hundreds of thousands of Angelenos to evacuate. The fire killed 16 people, including five in the Palisades fire. Thousands of families have lost their homes and are scrambling to find alternative accommodation.
