Tens of millions of American users, bracing for a ban on TikTok, are migrating en masse to other Chinese-backed platforms that have emerged as an alternative.
RedNote, known in China as “Xiaohongshu” (meaning “little red book” in Mandarin), was the most downloaded free app on the Apple App Store as of Monday.
The digital migration of so-called “TikTok refugees” comes ahead of a Jan. 19 deadline by which TikTok could face suspension in the United States unless parent company ByteDance sells the app.
Although the platform is primarily designed for Chinese users, the platform's dynamic mix of lifestyle content, videos, and community-building tools resonates with TikTok's displaced audience.
“The reason so many Americans are coming at once is because TikTok is about to be banned in the US,” WakoGeek explainednew RedNote usersin video.
While the app offers features reminiscent of TikTok, including short-form videos and an engaging community, it also stands out for its focus on lifestyle inspiration, product reviews, and shopping options.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Red Note has seen explosive growth among young Chinese users, especially women, who now account for 79% of its 300 million monthly active users.
Its focus on social shopping features and community building has made it popular in both China and the United States.
Red Note's popularity has attracted the attention of investors.
The app has raised $917 million in venture funding from backers including Tencent, Alibaba, and Sequoia China.
By 2024, the valuation after the secondary stock sale will reportedly be $17 billion, with profits expected to exceed $1 billion. According to Bloomberg.
Despite being Chinese-owned, RedNote's rise suggests users are prioritizing engaging content and community over geopolitical considerations.
However, it's important to note that RedNote is not a direct clone of TikTok.
While TikTok focuses on short-form video content, RedNote is said to be similar to Instagram in that it offers a broader range of lifestyle content, including photos, in-depth reviews, and community discussions.
This difference may appeal to users seeking a more comprehensive platform for lifestyle inspiration and sharing.
