Deion Sanders was ‘intrigued’ by Cowboys’ coaching job

Deion Sanders confirmed to ESPN that he spoke with owner Jerry Jones about the Cowboys' absence as head coach and called it an “interesting” scenario Monday night.

“It's really nice and interesting to hear from Jerry Jones,” said Sanders, head coach at the University of Colorado.he told ESPN. “I love Jerry and I believe in Jerry. When I get off the phone and process and think about it, it's interesting. But I love Boulder and our team, our coaches, our students. I love the organization and everything about the community.”

Sanders' comments to ESPN followed a late night report that Sanders and Jones had discussed the job, with the longtime coach talking to Mike McCarthy shortly before he became a free agent. It officially began on Monday after Dallas parted ways. The Saints and Bears could pounce.

However, the recruiting cycle has already begun, and each team has already completed interviews with top coordinators before the regional rounds of the playoffs begin, so the Cowboys are one of the six other teams that still have openings (Jets, Bears, Saints). , Raiders, Jaguars).

So far, Sanders has remained committed to the Colorado program he revived after taking office in 2023, despite rumors and speculation that he could move to the NFL.

He said last week that the only scenario in which he would step down was the opportunity to coach his two sons.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Sanders had “very strong interest” in starting the season for the Raiders, but The Athletic later reported that the team was acquiring Sanders to replace Antonio Pierce. He added, “I have no interest in that at all.''

In Sanders' two years at the helm, the Buffaloes went 13-12 and qualified for the Alamo Bowl this season.

Sanders' youngest son, Shedur, plays quarterback and is expected to be one of the top picks in April's NFL Draft.

During a long playing career that ultimately led to his induction into the Hall of Fame, Sanders spent five seasons as a defensive back and receiver for the Cowboys, winning one of their two Super Bowl titles.

And until the Cowboys officially hire their next coach, Sanders will still be a variable, especially after Monday's call with Jones.
