At least Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is trying to bring Deion Sanders home, according to multiple reports.
Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz first reported the development.
According to NFL officials, Jones spoke with the Cowboys legend and current head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes about the coaching vacancy that currently exists in Dallas.
Negotiations are expected to continue, and while Sanders is considered the “frontrunner” to replace the Cowboys, Schultz reported that the organization also plans to talk to other candidates about the replacement. .
The Cowboys confirmed Monday that Mike McCarthy, who coached the team over the past five seasons and led them to three postseason appearances, will not return next season.
Jones said in a statement that the Cowboys “immediately begin the search process to hire our next head coach.”
Sanders completed his second season as head coach at the University of Colorado, leading the program to a 9-4 record and 7-2 in his first year back in the Big 12.
The legendary corner had the opportunity to coach his son, Buffaloes star quarterback Shedule Sanders, the past two seasons at Colorado State.

The Cowboys' performance is not the first time Sanders' involvement has been reported since the NFL regular season ended earlier this month.
Sanders was involved in the Raiders' opening season and expressed “strong interest” in the job.
The Raiders may also make a move to select Shedeur in April's NFL Draft.
Sanders spent five years with the Cowboys, and was a member of the Cowboys team that won Super Bowl 30 in 1995.
