Russell Brand Under Fire for Advocating ‘New Ways’ of Understanding Scripture

Actor and comedian Russell Brand caused a stir on social media this week after posting a clip of himself suggesting we need a “new” way of understanding the Bible.

“I think now that we are potentially bound to our continuing selves, we have to learn new ways of understanding scripture,” says Brand. saidspeak to the audience. “And the new way of receiving Him, as the words are written in the language of the times, surely anticipates all time, and He exists beyond time, beyond space, outside the senses. Because the ultimate reality is beyond the conditions of our reality as we are.'' Accept it with gratitude. ”

“As residents of this realm, we have to learn how to function within technology. If we don't, I think technology can become quite Luciferian.”

His clip, posted on Monday, has since been viewed 2.5 million times. The comments section was filled with reactions criticizing Brando's approach to God's Word.

“Hey @rustyrockets — I'm praying for you, friend! But with all due respect, we don't need a 'new way of understanding the Bible.' This is a wrong and very dangerous statement. .” I wrote Owen Strachan, Senior Director, Dobson Cultural Center.

“Russell, it is best to learn, listen, and humble yourself during this time. Surround yourself with a healthy pastor and absorb the Word and Gospel. (Please cut off your microphone…) ” he added.

Babylon Bee editor Joel Berry encouraged Brand to remain humble when it comes to studying the Bible.

“Russell, you are a wonderful man and a fascinating thinker. I loved watching your conversion. But as a Christian you should remember the danger that your talents pose to you.” Berry I wrote.

“Continue to be a humble student of the Word. The Word is living and active and, as you said, lives beyond time and gives us all the pages we need. It was written by God who gave it to us.

“Perhaps that's all you wanted to say. The internet always erases context. I wish you all the best. Stay on this path!”

Podcast host Will Spencer warned The brand says it interprets the Bible through “a new age lens of personal experience and spiritual evolution.”

“If you want to learn about the historical Christian faith, this man has literally unlimited resources at his disposal,” Spencer said. “He can pick up the phone and call anyone. He can take a year off and just read books. Or he can do personal sanctification as he grows as a believer. You can also.”

“Instead, he stands on stage and says, 'We have to learn new ways to understand the Bible.' No, just read,” he added.

“Because technology doesn't help us understand the Bible. The Bible helps us understand technology,” Spencer concluded.

Brando converted to Christianity last year, but his faith journey hasn't been without controversy since he began. Last September, he criticized For performing a baptism in underwear.

In a response video, the brand addressed the controversy defending itself.

“When I look at it now, I think it looks a little immodest, being baptized in those pants, but in reality, when I take my clothes off, the only thing I'm wearing under my clothes is my pants,'' he said. I did. “That's what I'm wearing now. It wasn't a planned photo shoot. Some of my friends actually took pictures for their friends. Evan was being baptized. ”

“In any case, judging by the comments, some people thought I was being a little disrespectful and showing off,” he added. “You know, I read the comments below. But what I want to say is this: And I’m a little pretentious, but the Lord has made me a little pretentious, but I'm showing you, rest now, it's not for me.”
