David Lynch, the legendary director who explored the complexities of everyday American life with the seminal television series “Twin Peaks” and the surrealist films “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive,” has died.

He was 78 years old.
Lynch's official Facebook page featured a post from his family confirming his death. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
“It is with great sadness that we, his family, announce the passing of this man and artist, David Lynch,” the post reads. “We ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
Lynch's family added: “There is a huge hole in the world now that he is gone.” “But he said, 'Keep your eyes on the donut, not the hole.' It's a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way through.”
In a career spanning nearly five decades, Lynch became one of the most creative and philosophically bold voices in American entertainment, exposing audiences to concepts and images typically associated with the avant-garde genre. .
His work is intensely studied and discussed in American high school and college film studies classes, and is admired by film fans of all ages.
Lynch experimented with science fiction (“Dune” – 1984) and made a G-rated road movie (“Straight Story” – 1999). The main focus of his work was to highlight the macabre and morbid elements beneath the surface of America's “white picket fence” ideal, and to delve deep into the human psyche.
His television series Twin Peaks (1990-1991) was a surprising blend of prime-time melodrama, metaphysical horror, and murder mystery.

However, in recent years, Lynch's on-screen presence had diminished.
