TikTok says it will ‘go dark’ on Sunday without ‘definitive’ assurance that the Biden admin won’t enforce ban

TikTok announced Friday that the social media platform will go “go dark” on Sunday unless there is “final” assurance from the Biden administration that the ban will not be enforced.

“The statement issued today by President Biden and the Department of Justice fails to provide the clarity and assurances needed by essential service providers to make TikTok available to more than 170 million Americans.” said in a posted statement. X.

“Unfortunately, TikTok will be forced to cease service on January 19 unless the Biden administration immediately provides a final statement that satisfies our most critical service providers that guarantees non-enforcement.” Ta.

The White House said earlier this week that Biden had no intention of enforcing the ban, which is scheduled to take effect Sunday, adding that it would be up to President-elect Trump, who takes office on Monday.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law that would ban TikTok unless Chinese-owned ByteDance sells it by Sunday, citing national security risks from its relationship with China.

President Trump said he needed to consider the ban before making a decision.

“The Supreme Court's decision was expected and everyone must respect it,” he said. “My decision regarding TikTok will be made in the not-too-distant future, but I need time to consider the situation. Stay tuned!”

During the presidential campaign, Trump said he would “never ban TikTok” even after joining the platform.

Also on Friday, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said President Trump's “commitment to work with us to find a solution to keep TikTok available in the United States. “This is a strong stance against the First Amendment and arbitrary censorship.”

Mr Chu is scheduled to attend the inauguration ceremony on Monday.

Trump tried to ban TikTok during his first term in office.
