Dick Vitale’s broadcast return delayed after home accident creates ‘health challenges,’ ‘physical limitations’

Renowned basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale will not be returning to the booth for next week's ESPN game between Duke and Wake Forest due to an accident at his home in Florida.

Vitale announced Saturday that he had collapsed at home and was hospitalized. Vitale said in a statement that the incident has caused new health problems and physical limitations.

“I had an accident at my home in Florida that has caused me new health problems and physical limitations for the foreseeable future,” Vitale said.

“Right now we just have to wait a little longer. We don't know exactly when that will be, but we expect a full recovery and will provide updates as we receive more information. Despite this, I feel blessed to have the support of my family, friends, and teammates at ESPN. ”

Vitale has not been called to a game in the past two years as he battles various health conditions, including vocal cord cancer.

Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021, and a few months later with lymphoma. He returned in the fall of 2021, but then had to sit out to undergo vocal cord surgery.

Vitale announced in the summer of 2023 that the cancer had spread to his vocal cords and then to his lymph nodes, leaving him battling four types of cancer in four years.

He underwent radiation therapy, chemotherapy and other surgeries over the past two years before announcing earlier this month that he was cancer-free.

But after his recent fall, Vitale will need to recover at least one more time before college basketball fans hear him call his next game.
