Dems Have ‘Always’ Supported Deporting Violent Criminals

On CNN's “OutFront” broadcast Monday, Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said: voted against the Laken Riley Act On Monday, he said, “Democrats have never believed in, 'No, no, no, don't deport violent criminals.' We have always aimed for that. ”

host Erin Burnett asked.[D]You are dissatisfied with the Democratic Party. “Look, if you had previously deported violent criminals and done so much effort to deport them, if Democrats would have handled a situation like the tragic death of Laken Riley differently. If you had, you probably wouldn't have done it.'' Are we sitting here having this conversation right now? ”

Mr. Padilla replied: “Well, part of it is messaging, but part of it is – I don’t think the Democrats have ever said, no, no, no, let’s stop deporting violent criminals. We've always aimed for that. But we did – there's an element of that in the conversation, it's there. [are] People who come to the United States seeking asylum. That needs to be addressed. But the people who have lived here for years, if not decades, are just like the dreamers, like the farm workers, and like the other essential workers who keep this country running. Like, totally different people and they deserve better than the chaos that comes back to their families. And their communities under threat from President Trump. ”
