A 15-year-old boy suffered a head injury after falling while surfing on the Bronx subway, police said.
The unidentified boy fell off the front of the No. 5 train at the East Gun Hill Road station between Gun Hill Road and Pelham Parkway Tuesday just before 6 p.m., officials said.
Some of his friends were at the station, but the injured boy appeared to be the only one who risked his life by riding the train, officials said.
He was found with head injuries and taken to New York City Health Hospital Jacobi, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.
The number of deaths from subway surfing rose dramatically last year, according to NYPD data.
Six people died attempting to perform this dangerous stunt, with half of the deaths occurring between September and October.
At least 181 people have been arrested for subway surfing-related incidents through November 2024, according to New York City Police Department data.
The MTA has taken steps to counter this reckless behavior, including New York City students' subway announcements telling passengers to “stay in the train” and “stay alive.”
