Bill Parcells, who has been Aaron Glenn's coach, mentor and advisor dating back to his days with the Jets in the 1990s, told the Post on Wednesday that the recruiting process included the following: He said they had been talking until Tuesday night. I interviewed with the Jets for the head coaching job.
“I talked to him yesterday,” Parcells said. “It’s like we’re trying to get President Trump today.”
Now, Glenn, who played cornerback for the Jets under Parcells from 1997 to 1999 and with the Cowboys in 2005 and 2006, has been named the Jets' new head coach.
And Mr. Parcells is also very happy.
“I think highly of him,” Parcells said. “I'll tell you right now, he's a feisty, competitive guy. Get ready. He won't (mess up). He's a serious guy. He's serious about this. He's a good football player. I love it. It always impressed me. He'll do a good job.
“I hope he has good people around him,” Parcells continued. “That's how it will be. I don't know who's going to bring him in. But trust me, I know he's studied it and he's not going to start from scratch here.”
One thing Parcells doesn't accept is the argument that Glenn's lack of head coaching experience would be a disadvantage for the Jets, who needed someone with head coaching experience.
“I feel very strongly about it,” Parcells said. “This guy has worked really hard to prepare himself to be a coach. There aren't many players who, once their career is over, are willing to start at a lower level scouting job to learn about the world of professional football and recruiting. He did it all. He worked hard and served his apprenticeship.”
More than Parcells, who defined the buzzword “changed the culture” when he took over the team in 1997 after the disastrous two-year Rich Kotite era of 1995-1996, the Jets have never been more different. No one knows how difficult animals are to tame. The team finished with 4 wins and 28 losses.
Will Glenn be able to handle it?
“He'll be fine,” Parcells predicted. “Now, listen, I’ll tell you this: You don’t know what it’s like until you’re a head coach, and he’s going to pick it up right away.
“He's been hearing about it from multiple people for a long time and I wish him all the best. I'm excited. I really am.”
