The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1951, prohibits a person from serving as president for more than two terms.
The bill was passed by Congress in 1947 after Franklin Delano Roosevelt won four terms in the White House. Roosevelt died the year after he was elected to his fourth presidential term in 1944.
