A California ballot initiative proposing that California become its own country and secede from the United States has been submitted and authorized to collect signatures.
If this measure appears on the November 2028 ballot, voters will ask, “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?” Local news agency KCRA3 reported on friday.
According to the report, the guidelines require 50 percent participation of registered voters and a “yes” vote of 55 percent of eligible voters, which would amount to a “vote of no confidence in the United States.” This action would further demonstrate that it is the “will of the people of California” to become a state.
“According to the language of the initiative, California's current government and relationship with the United States would not change, but a commission would be established to report on California's viability as an independent nation.” The book says: “The initiative estimates one-time costs related to elections, including the creation of a commission on national sovereignty and independence that would cost $10 million. The commission estimates it will cost the state an additional $2 million a year to operate. ”
The deadline for distribution is July 22, and the initiative requires 546,651 valid signatures.
“Legal secession would require a constitutional amendment, which would require approval by Congress and the 38 states,” the report said.
