Rep. Chris Delzio (D-Pennsylvania) said Sunday that his constituents agree with most Americans that immigrants who enter the country illegally and commit crimes should be deported. said.
But he added in an interview on NewsNation's “The Hill Sunday” that voters also support a path to legal status for people who “play by the rules.”
“Look, I think most people in my district and across the country believe that they're here without permission, they're here illegally, they're committing a crime, they should be sent back to where they came from,” Delzio said. he said. He asked how the Democratic Party would deal with the issue of immigration, since its position differs from that of the majority of the public.
Delzio, a first-term Democrat whose district voted for President Trump in 2024, said Democrats and Republicans are aligned on issues such as providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers.
“I also believe that Democrats and Republicans who believe in public safety, who believe in border security, are people who, like the dreamers who were brought here as children, who work hard and play by the rules. I think they want to be able to pay their taxes. And they have to do everything they can to be good neighbors to us here in this country. Must have a way to earn the status earned in.
“And we can do both. We can have strong and meaningful border security. We can have a better immigration system, we can play by the rules, we can have legal We can do all those things, and by the way, we have the laws to do it.'' he said.
