A human torso was found in a suitcase floating on the East River near Governor Island Wednesday evening, police officers and law enforcement said.
Passing ships spotted suitcases and warned police before NYPD port forces were dispatched around 5:30pm, officers said.
Police opened their bags and made a discovery that ran through their stomachs.
The Harbor Unit then returned the bags to the beach, NYPD said.
EMS and medical inspector staff met with police at Pier 16 for further investigation.
The human remains probably belonged to a man, sources said.
It is unclear how long the suitcases have been drifting through the water, and in the early stages much information was not readily available in the case.
