Groundhog Day: Uncover 140 years worth of tradition in Janice Dean’s new Fox Nation special

Fox Weather's Deans are divided into rapid changes in technology and a lasting tradition, including groundhogs, which see (or don't see) their shadows. As computers and online analytics changed weather forecasts, television networks began to cover more accurately.

Dean was able to chat with several key individuals involved in the annual festival at Gobbler's Knob. That star-studded list includes Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Groundhog Club's inner circle, Tom Dunkel, and even Punks Tawny Phil's own handler.

During the programme, Dunkel explained why Groundhog Day is so special compared to other American events and festivals. As he explained, “it's the only holiday with a destination.”

“You can't go to Christmas, you can't go to Easter, you can't go to Halloween,” Dunkel said, referring to the annual gathering at Punksauney. “But my God, you can go on Groundhog Day.”

Governor Shapiro commented on the symbolism of Punxsutawney's annual tradition when he spoke with Dean during the special, characterising the festival as a “joy” day.

“I think it's these amazing traditions that bring people together that make Pennsylvania great and America great,” he added.

The 2025 edition of Punxsutawney's prognosis was the 138th in the history of the event. The festival began an hour ago and at freezing temperatures, despite no groundhogs appearing and seeing his shadow until 7am. Live music performances and fireworks hyped the crowd until Punxsutawney Phil's predictions were revealed.
