Legendary music producer and head of Murder Inc. Records Irv Gotti died Wednesday at the age of 54.
Sources close to his family told TMZ Gotti died in New York City, but stopped short of divulging information pertaining to the circumstances surrounding the talented artist’s passing. Gotti produced music with famous stars DMX, Ja Rule, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti, to name just a few. He left a significant footprint in the world of hip hop and will forever be remembered for his epic contributions, including producing the song “Can I Live” on Jay-Z’s first album, “Reasonable Doubt.” He changed his label’s name to The Inc. due to concerns regarding the more well-known name.

Gotti’s innate ability to blend melodic beats with classic hip hop shaped the sound of hip hop music in the late 90s. He lent his talents as a writer and producer to some of the most popular hits that remain a critical part of pop culture today.
Some of his multi-platinum hits included the J-Lo and Ja Rule duets “Ain’t It Funny” and “I’m Real,” as well as the Ashanti’s songs “Foolish” and “Rain On Me” and Fat Joe’s hit, “What’s Luv?”
His label went head-to-head against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Bad Boy Records, smoking the charts with DMX’s debut album “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot,” which sold over four million copies in the U.S. and spawned the iconic hip-hop classic Ruff Ryders’ Anthem. Gotti’s influence revived the reputation of Def Jam Records before he went on to create his own label, Murder Inc.

Among his many accolades, Gotti earned a Grammy Award for co-producing Ashanti’s debut album in 2002, which won best contemporary R&B album. His talents were behind the launch of Jennifer Lopez’ music career, with the remixes of “I’m Real” and “Love Don’t Cost A Thing.”
Gotti received producer credits for 28 chart hits in the U.S., including the likes of Mary J. Blige, and was responsible for co-signing Vanessa Carlton to a record deal before producing her album “Heroes & Thieves,” and for producing Ja Rule’s Debut album, “Venni Vetti Vecci.”
The famous producer’s successful label was the center of the 2022 BET documentary, “The Murder Inc. Story.”
Gotti candidly discussed his experience with diabetes and admitted over the years that he did not consistently use his insulin. He had struggled to change his diet and had suffered a stroke.
Initial reports suggested Gotti may have recently suffered another stroke and subsequent brain bleed, but that has not been confirmed at this time.
The world of music is shaken by the loss of such a talented star that is survived by the legacy of hits that he poured his heart into. (RELATED: Tiger Woods Announces Death Of His Mother)
