More than 90 people fall ill with gastrointestinal illness on Royal Caribbean cruise

80 passengers and two crew members experienced gastrointestinal disease symptoms on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship returning to Tampa, Florida on Saturday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The outbreak was reported to the CDC's Ship Sanitation Program on Tuesday.

People who get sick have experienced diarrhea and vomiting. At this time, the CDC has stated that the cause is unknown.

Cruise ships must report gastrointestinal diseases to the CDC, the agency noted.

“The reported cases are the total total of the voyage,” the CDC website states. “It doesn't mean that when you arrive or leave at a port or a ship, that everyone is sick at the same time.”

Noroviruses are “often the cause of gastrointestinal diseases on cruise ships,” but the CDC says it will determine that it is “a time consuming.” Flight specimens of affected passengers were collected to assist in the investigation.
