The accident occurred early Saturday morning, killing at least 41 people according to the Tabasco government, adding that recovery efforts are still ongoing.

Local authorities say the bus carrying 48 people crashed into a truck, killing 38 passengers and two drivers. The truck driver was also killed.

“So far, only 18 skulls have been identified, but many more are missing,” a Tabasco security source said on condition of anonymity, adding that recovery efforts continued.

Images shared by Reuters show the bus was completely burned out after being engulfed in flames after the collision.

In a Facebook post, Bus Operator Tour's Acosta expressed “I'm deeply sorry about what happened” and worked with the police to determine what happened and whether the bus is moving at speed limit. He said there was.

“The Ministry of Public Affairs informed us that the investigation will be carried out at the Candelaria City Public Prosecutor's Office, so that the relatives of passengers and friends must not go to this department to carry out the relevant procedures. “Not going to do that,” Acosta of the tour said on Facebook.

Government state Tabasco said recovery efforts are continuing, including efforts to identify those killed.
