Bed Bath & Beyond stores to return as Kirkland’s OKs $25M investment

The Bed Bath & Beyond Retail Store is back, but it's a smaller shape than the customers are used to.

Kirkland's Inc. has successfully completed the conclusion of its $25 million investment agreement with Beyond, the parent company of Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock, Zulily and BuyBuy Baby.

As part of the agreement, Kirkland will become the exclusive brick-and-mortar operator and licensee for the new, smaller format Bed Bath & Beyond Store, which is scheduled to begin nationwide from later this year.

Kirkland shareholders have overwhelmingly approved the investment announced this fall. This was voted 97% of the vote in favor of issuing common stock as part of the agreement.

Beyond, formerly known as Overstock.com, acquired Bed Bath & Beyond intellectual property in April 2023 after the retailer filed for bankruptcy.

Beyond is working to move Bed bath & Beyond from brick-and-mortar stores to the online first brand and reintroduce physical stores through partnerships with Kirkland's, The Home Décor and Furnishings Retailer.

The company also owns online clothing and lifestyle retailer Zulily, and recently acquired the global rights to buy Buy Baby as part of its expansion strategy.

Following a special shareholders meeting last Wednesday, the company completed its $8 million share purchases and converted its $8.5 million term loan into common stock.

In total, Beyond has now injected $25 million into Kirkland's, holding approximately 40% of the company's outstanding shares.

Beyond's expansion efforts are expanding beyond Bed Bath & Beyond.

Earlier this week, the company announced an agreement with BBBY Acquisition Co. LLC to acquire the global rights to buy Buy Baby for $5 million.

The baby-centric brand, once a subsidiary of Bed Bath & Beyond, was a popular destination for baby gear and registry services before filing for bankruptcy.

As Kirkland moves forward with new opportunities for additional capital and growth, Sullivan highlighted the company's focus on maximizing the value of the partnership and improving profitability.

The retailer currently operates 317 stores in 35 states, positioning himself for the presence of a revitalized retailer under an expanded role within Beysed's portfolio.
