Auto giants Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi drop merger talks

Japanese automakers Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi said Thursday they were removing talks for business integration.

The automaker has agreed to end the agreement on structural considerations for collaboration, their joint statement said.

Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Corp. announced that they will hold discussions in December to establish a joint holding company.

From the start, analysts were confused about the benefits for any company as the overlapping lineup and strengths of models in the industry, which were shaken by the arrival of strong newcomers such as Tesla and BYD and the transition to electrification. .

Honda and Nissan initially said they were about to finalize an agreement by June, and they established a holding company by August.

The three carmakers will continue to work together on electric and smart cars, such as autonomous driving, they said Thursday.

Some said Nissan has balked to become a minor player in a partnership with Honda.
