A fiery pile of Friday at the Interstate 80 Tunnel in southwestern Wyoming killed at least two people, seriously injured at least five people, and closed the highway.
The collision included an unknown number of trucks and other vehicles inside and outside the Green River tunnel.
Black smoke and explosive tires that have become difficult for rescuers; Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas Warren said.
A crash on the westbound tube of the Twin Tunnel late Friday morning closed the highway in both directions, but it was not estimated that it would resume late afternoon.
Expressway traffic was rerouted through the Green River.
A statement from Memorial Hospital near Sweetwater County urged people not to visit the wreck of “large casualties” unless there is an emergency or family.
Hospital spokeswoman Lena Warren said she still doesn't know how many victims were recognized.
The quarterly miles (400 meters) tunnel is located under Castle Rock, a sandstone formation above Green River, a Sweetwater County seat of 11,500 people.
