The fiery pile inside the Interstate 80 tunnel in Wyoming killed five other people and at least two people who were injured late Friday morning.
Fire and smoke swirling from the tunnel as people ran for safety.
Some outlets reported that their structural integrity was threatened.

The Wyoming Department of Transport said on social media that it was “in the process of assessing tunnel infrastructure” with a team of geologists and bridge engineers.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 11:37am at the westbound Green River Tunnel, causing a fire inside the tunnel.

Smoke and explosive tires in the tunnel made it difficult for the first responder to access after a crash, Wyoming Highway Patrol TPR. Nicholas Warren said.

“My heart is broken for the families and loved ones of the victims of this horrific crash,” Widett director Darrin Westby said in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are directed at everyone involved. Wydot and WHP will remain on the ground to assist local emergency responders and provide additional support and traffic management.”

“We would like to sincerely thank the first responders in Sweetwater County for their support and support in responding to this tragic crash,” Lt. Col. Carl Gelman, Lt. Col., Wyoming Highway Patrol, in a statement. I stated.
“Drivers are reminded to follow the speed limits posted through detours, and delays are likely to occur.”

The highway remained closed in both directions on Friday evening, with the eastbound lanes of the tunnel being used to staging the first responders.
