Alex Bregman has signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.
At his introduction press conference, he assured that his decision was driven by more than merely a favorable offer.
“I'm a winning player. Bregman declared on Sunday, highlighting that his choice is rooted in the team's potential for ultimate victory.
“These players are getting players,” he continued, referring to his Red Sox teammate. “We have a coach who won here. After talking to some of them over the last two days, we're planning on winning here. We know there's something special here.”
Once drafted in Boston's 29th round in 2012, Bregman chose to go to college. He was then drafted overall in 2015 by Houston, who came out of LSU, but spent his final nine seasons with the Astros.
Bregman arrived in Boston, won two World Seriess in Houston and was selected twice for an All-Star.
Red Sox Chief Baseball Head Craig Breslow explained the organization's strategy and said, “We've entered the offseason with a very clearly defined punch list of what we want to achieve. We've been rotated. We talked about adding to the top of the page, rebuilding the entire pen, improving infield defense, and adding a right-handed bat to balance the lineup.
“And as the offseason progressed, it became clear that Alex was the perfect fit for what we were trying to achieve.”
Bregman chose the Red Sox after being pursued by the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs.
Speaking about the versatility of Bregman, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said: He's going to help us. ”
Bregman has hit at least 23 home runs in each of the last three seasons, scoring 93, 98 and 75 RBIs over the course of these campaigns.
Career .272 batter Bregman has hovered around .260 since 2022, and although he hasn't been an All-Star since 2019, he maintains an impactful daily contributor when he's healthy.
