“Stuart!”
Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen met again in time for the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special. The trio collaborated for a Volkswagen commercial that aired before a major event on Sunday night.
The “Californian” sketch made its debut at the NBC Variety Show in 2012. It was returned to SNL's 40th anniversary special in 2015, and was brought back in 2018 when the “Barry” alum (46) hosted “SNL.”
In the ad, Wiig's Karina (her Valley Girl Accent) meets Hader's Devin as a preview of the next episode of the soap opera parody.
“Thank you, Devin, for meeting me alone in Malibu Beach. I really missed you,” she says.
“I saw me this morning at Marina del Rey,” Devin says. Karina said:
The two go out to kiss, but are interrupted when Fred Armisen's Stuart rises up with id.buzz, Volkswagen's new electric van.
“Wait, Stuart? What are you doing here?” Devin asks.
Stuart responds: “I enjoy life with my new Volkswagen ID buzz. What are you doing here? …I've come closer to life with a positive vibe!”
Devin screams that it is very “radd” as the trio are showing the camera dramatically together.
“I know it's radd, Devin! I drove five Gots on a 405 and took 10 to PCH,” explains Stuart.
The group then jumps on Stuart's ride, and, naturally, everything admires themselves, staring in the rearview mirror.
The “SNL” writer celebrates a major milestone on Sunday with a three-hour special with creator Lorne Michaels, but helped create a new ad. The original costumes from the “SNL” sketch were also used.
“The idea for the 'Californian' sketch was inspired by a bit of an inspiration on SNL. Over a decade later, we were explaining how we got to our current location in LA. And it's an honor that these characters continue to celebrate their love for California. Hollywood Reporter.
Armisen, 58, added: “Volkswagen and SNL are both brands that are embedded in all aspects of culture. It was an incredible experience to revise these characters for so long, and merging these two heritages in a way that remains true to the original sketch made it even more special. ”
For Wiig, she recorded a location that she “never laughed.”
“With Fred and Bill, it was difficult to get through the take, and just having the 'SNL' crew there created this loving atmosphere. I love these characters and I watch them reunite for Volkswagen,” she gushed out.
The 51-year-old “Bridesmaid” actress was a cast member of “SNL” for seven seasons from 2005 to 2012, returning to Rockefeller Center for multiple occasions.
Hader starred for eight seasons from 2005 to 2013, and was probably best known for playing Stefon. Fictional characters often appear in “Weekend Updates” and are based on the people of John Mulany who have encountered in real life, including club promoters and baristas.
“When I was on 'SNL', I was a bit of a basketball case,” Hader told Variety in 2019. I was consumed so much by work and anxiety. ”
Hader also had a panic attack on stage. “Sometimes I felt like people were like, 'Oh, he just wanted attention or something.' It was, “No, I'm legal. I'm going crazy now,” he shared.
Armisen overlapped with Wiig and Hader for several years on the NBC series from 2002 to 2013.
Armisen and Wiig participated in the “SNL50” anniversary special on Sunday night, but Hader was significantly absent.
