Crews ‘Heroically’ Perform Rescues as Floods Hit KY Town

Residents of a small town in Pikeville, Kentucky, are working on something miserable flood The crew works to rescue their neighbors.

Heavy rain fell over the weekend in western and northern Tennessee, southern Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia.

Around 11 weather-related deaths have occurred in Kentucky, according to Gov. Andy Besher (D), CBS News reported Monday.

At one point late Saturday night, officials said the river level at the Bowles additional monitoring point reached 38 feet, prompting them to set up a flood gate. As of Monday morning, Pikeville Public Safety said that the river levels could be fully subsided and the pond gates could be opened, but that water levels would continue to be monitored.

“Since 3pm on February 15th, the Pikeville Fire Department has been heroic, participating in over 50 Swift Water Rescue Operations and answering over 130 emergency calls.”

He added:

Floods along Levisa Fork have affected many areas, including almost every home in the Lakeview Subdivision near Pikeville Commons. Several homes along the road in front of Pikeville High School were also flooded. Our emergency response team continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our residents and assess the full extent of damage.

“The dangerous situation is not over in Pikeville and its surrounding areas. The National Weather Service in Jackson, Kentucky is publishing local winter storm clocks that are valid from Tuesday evening until Thursday morning.” said the CBS report.
