President Trump has not retreated from the standoff between the White House and the Associated Press on the Gulf of America, a body of water previously known as the Gulf of Mexico.
The style of the AP is to refer to the waters in the first reference, with a previous name that is recognized in other countries and that many of the AP's readers may still be recognized.
Trump said the Associated Press “refuses what the law is.”
The president noted that he intends to lock out wire services from Key White House spaces “until we agree” to change style.
The AP on Tuesday said, “This is about the government telling the public and showing what words they will use and retaliate if they do not follow the government's orders.
Several press freedom groups and the White House Correspondents' Association have denounced the decision and urged the Trump administration to reconsider it.
The episode is widely seen as the latest salvo in Trump's long-standing fighting relationship with the media.
“I don't think they're benefiting anything because they don't benefit us,” Trump said of the Associated Press. “That's how life works.”
