The latest in a long line of winter storms is heading straight to the East Coast, threatening to dump heavy snow and ice in several states.
Snowy storms in the Midwest spread across the valleys of Tennessee and Ohio on Wednesday, bringing more misery to places that have just begun cleaning out of deadly weekend floods.
Up to 10 inches of snow could be possible along Virginia's Atlantic coast, and a significant ice buildup was predicted in eastern North Carolina, the National Weather Service said.
Elsewhere, polar waters have been taken over from Montana to southern Texas. Bismarck, North Dakota, won 39 degrees early on Tuesday, breaking the date record set in 1910.
The biggest batch of record cold temperatures is likely to be hit early Thursday and Friday, said Andrew Olison, a meteorologist with the Weather Bureau.
Deja embraces the storm again
North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein declared Tuesday's state of emergency in anticipation of Wednesday's mix of ice and snow.
“What we fear most is the loss of road conditions and force due to ice buildup.” Stein said Tuesday X. “So people need to prepare.”
Virginia remained under a similar declaration as Governor Glenn Youngkin. Published for another storm On February 10th, the National Guard and state agencies allowed local governments to assist.

Snow after the flood
The weekend storm that thwarted the eastern US kills at least 17 people, including 14 in Kentucky, where more than half of the snow is expected from Wednesday.
“It's a snowstorm in the middle of a natural disaster,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Besher said Tuesday.
In southern West Virginia, weekend floods killed three people in McDowell County, destroying roads and cutting off public water systems.
Thousands remained without power Tuesday night. The shelter was open at multiple churches and schools, but more than a dozen locations served hot meals.
The incoming snowstorms will “become awfully hampered, even if we don't stop the many efforts we have,” said McDowell County Commissioner Michael Brooks. “We want to make sure we are at least doing our best to keep people warm.”
My bones are cold
More than 80 million people in the central part of the country were in the midst of holding the cold, the weather department said.
Hundreds of public school districts canceled classes and switched to second-day online learning in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri on Wednesday.

The smooth road caused minor injuries in a crash Tuesday in an egg-carrying tractor trailer in Will Roger Stern Pike in northeastern Oklahoma.
