Tour of Algarve’s opening stage is scrapped after peloton goes wrong way | Cycling

The opening stage of the Algarve tour ended with chaos on Wednesday, with most of the Peloton going the wrong path just before the finish, with race organizers later canceling the results.

As the rider walked through the roundabout just before the house, the lead car went to the wrong side of the barrier, and most of the bundle was confused to see two races spread out.

The mix-up left Italian Filippo Gunna with an easier sprint finish than expected, while Ineos Grenadier Rider raised his arms at the celebration before crossing the line. But his joy was short-lived. There was no winner's ceremony. The podium in Lagos remained empty, and all the 192.2km rides from Portimao were in vain.

“In the approach to the Lagos finish line, the Peloton was split, with numerous riders taking the wrong route and following a detour of the support car and missing the finish line,” the race organizer said in a statement. “The lawmakers' colleges interpreted the regulations and thought that, given what happened, the sport's truth was ultimately unwinnable, so they decided to cancel the stage,” Race Director Sergio Sousa said. I said that.
