McConnell announces retirement
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will not be re-electioned in 2026 and will retire instead, the longtime senator announced Thursday.
McConnell served For decades, including Senate majority leaders under President Donald Trump's first administration. McConnell is the longest-serving Senate leader in American history and announced his retirement on his 83rd birthday.
“On seven times, my fellow Kentuckians sent me to the Senate,” McConnell said in a statement prepared on the Senate floor. “Every day in the meantime I am humbled by the trust they have placed on me to do their business here.
