Jordan Binnington saves game for Canada to deny US in 4 Nations overtime

Boston – All tournaments, The Talk Up North is centered around Jordan Binnington.

Canada chose the wrong goaltender.

Canada is starting the wrong goaltender.

How to prove them wrong.

“It's sporting in some respects,” said the gold medal around his neck after handing over Canada's victory in the 31-stop 4 Nations final. “And as an athlete or a competitor, there's always that doubt. You have to use it as a motive to find your way and trust yourself to get the job done.”

Conor McDavid, who won the 8:18 winner in Canada, 3-2, was far more direct.

“Binar is the winner,” McDavid said. “That's what it's ultimately. …He plays in big moments, the moments don't reach him. He's three in overtime to allow us to score goals. Or four world saves. All credit to him. Hopefully some of those hatreds will retreat from him.”

Thursday fit that in the same building where Binnington won the signature victory of his career in Game 7 of the 2019 Stanley Cup final.

And the busy overtime sequence of Binnington seeing his jaw drop stop for three consecutive times (two with Oston Matthews and a third of Brady Tokachuk) becomes Team Canada's eternal highlight reel.

“At that moment, I don't remember,” Binnington said. “That's when you're in that moment. I was trying to do my job.”

Those were the chances Team USA was mourning in the dressing room after the oppressed game.

“He made some big saves at the right time,” said a distraught Tkachuk.

There may be a few Canadians who have better savings than Binnington this season, but Canada would not have won in four countries without him.

Connor Helebuick out he went in Montreal, but it was a 2-1 game before the empty net goal, and many big saves from Binnington were hidden by the bad goal he gave to Jake Gunzel It was there.

It would have been easy for manager John Cooper to unleash a torrent of criticism of his way and then headed for Addin Hill.

He stuck to Binnington, and Canada reaped the reward.

On many Thursday nights, when Canada had a better look, Helebuick was to put Team USA on his back.

But in a sudden death, it was all Binnington, and then, during the celebration, Cooper spoke in his ears, delivering his final message.

“I think he's just saying he's proud. We're just enjoying the moment together,” Binnington said. “There's a lot of noise in this game.”

For Binnington, now there is only silence.
